Duke of Edinburgh at Dixons Kings Academy

The Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) programme at Dixons Kings Academy encourages students to develop resilience, independence, teamwork, and life skills through a range of activities, including volunteering, physical challenges, and adventurous expeditions. One of the most exciting elements of the programme is the annual camping trip, which marks the culmination of their DofE experience.

Each year, we run three expeditions, taking around 40–50 students into the wilds of Wilsden. Students begin with an 8km walk on the first day, navigating the trails and learning essential outdoor skills along the way. They then pitch their tents, prepare their sleeping arrangements, and cook meals over camping stoves. Evenings are filled with campfire activities, games, and opportunities to connect with nature.

A key part of the Duke of Edinburgh expeditions is encouraging students to disconnect from the digital world and enjoy hands-on experiences. While students were allowed a brief phone check in the evening, most chose to fully immerse themselves in the activities and the natural environment around them.

The DofE expeditions not only provide unforgettable memories but also develops confidence, problem-solving skills, and a sense of independence, preparing students for challenges both in school and beyond.
